Properly boxing your printer for travel is very important. There are some steps you need to take before putting your printer in the box. We have outlined those here, along with the directions on how to situate the foam pieces. Please read the complete directions for each section before starting.
If you are returning your printer for repair, please pack only the printer unit itself and its power supply. Do not return any of the other accessories, such as the glass bed or reel holder.
If you are shipping your printer for other reasons (including RMAs, returns, or exchanges) please include all of the accessories. All accessories fit into the cardboard box that sits in the top of the foam. Do not leave the glass installed in the printer during shipping under any circumstances.
There have been some changes to the packaging, so if your packaging does not have a strap, please follow the instructions here instead. If you have an Ultimaker 2 Go, please follow the instructions here.
To protect the alignment of your printer and your endstops, it’s important to secure the head. Do this by using two zip ties, one for front-to-back and one for left-to-right. Position the head in the front-left corner of the printer. If zip ties are not available, please use a loop of knotted string or wire.
Use one tie to secure the rod that skewers the head front-to-back onto the axis rod on the left side. Use the other tie to secure the rod that skewers the head left-to-right onto the axis rod in the front. Make sure ONLY the two rods are within the tie. Do not tie the belts or the front panel to the rods. Tighten the zip ties to the point where the head does not move, but not so tight that there is pressure on the rods.
To protect the z-stop, it’s important to keep the heated bed from smashing downward. Place bubble wrap or pieces of cardboard under the bed to keep it from breaking the z-stop. The cushion under the bed should be about 1/4 inch thick.
Place your accessories into the accessory box. The power brick fits in the middle. Tuck the power cord into one of the side compartments.
Before putting the printer into the box, you’ll need to situate the foam. Place the bottom foam in front of you so the two prongs are toward you. Many people find it easiest to place the strap under the bottom foam at the beginning. There is a notch that the strap fits into. If you find that the strap is in your way, you can put it to the side for now.
Place the printer on top of the bottom foam with the front of the printer toward you. The rectangular depression on the left accommodates the electronics cover and the empty space between the prongs accommodates the display cover. When positioned correctly, the printer will sit securely in the foam and will not rock.
Place the back foam next. The back foam has a rectangular hole where the feeder goes. You’ll want to tip the printer forward a bit to slide the foam into place. There is a notch toward the top on the left where the Bowden tube fits.
Then place the front foam. The front foam has a round hole that fits a roll of Ultimaker filament. You will need to tip the printer backward a bit to place the front foam. If you have difficulty, make sure the prongs are going into the front foam and not under it. There is a notch at the top of this piece for the Bowden tube as well.
Your cardboard accessory box fits in the depression above the printer. Once everything is in place, secure the strap. You may need to adjust the length.
You’re now ready to place the printer into the box. Securely tape the box shut. We recommend placing a pieces of tape across the seal and then making a tic-tac-toe pattern.
